Ram Navami Mahotsav

Ram Navmi is one of the Hindu Festivals that celebrates the birth of Lord Ram to Mata Kaushalya and Raja Dasratha. This Year on the occasion of Ram Navmi, we are coming together to celebrate the festivity at Shivrinarayan in Janjgir Champa district of Chhattisgarh which holds importance in the Hindu Mythology as one of those places where Ram visited during his exile or vanvas. The place is recognised as an important destination on the prestigious Ram Van Gaman Paryatan Paripath Project of Chhattisgarh.

Shivrinarayan and the legend of Shabari

Hindu Mythology describes Rama’s exile period to be a total of 14 years. More than 10 years of Ram’s exile are believed to have been spent in the present state of Chhattisgarh and Shivrinarayan happens to be one of those places which are intertwined with Ramayan for its famous story of Mata Shabari.

Shabari was a devotee of Lord Ram and waited for many years in this area for Ram’s audience. The strong devotion Shabari had for Ram, made Him visit Shabari instead of many others who were waiting to see Ram.

Shabari was very happy to meet Ram one day in the forest and offered him some berries she had collected meticulously for him. She had nothing but a pure heart to offer in her devotion to Ram. To ensure that Ram doesn’t get any bitter berry, Shabari offered berries only after tasting each one. To this, Lakshmana raised the concern that Shabari had already tasted them and therefore unworthy of eating. Ram said that of the many types of food he had tasted, "nothing could equal these berry fruits, offered with such devotion. You taste them, then alone will you know.”

There is a temple in the name of Shabari in Shivrinarayan based on this belief.
